What Activities Can We Do in Manitou Springs, Colorado?

Surrounded by the spectacular Rocky Mountains, Manitou Springs, Colorado, is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and anyone seeking adventure in a charming, historic setting. Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie, a nature lover, or a history buff, this vibrant town has activities to suit every interest. If you’re planning a visit to this captivating destination, here are eight exciting things you can do in Manitou Springs:

Pikes Peak, Manitou Springs Colorado

Stop 1: Walk the Inspiring Garden of the Gods – A Natural Wonder in Manitou Springs

The Garden of the Gods is a free-to-visit natural wonder. Not to mention it boasts awe-inspiring scenery. We chose to explore the park on foot, walking the many miles of trails that wind through the dramatic sandstone formations. Most visitors opt for a scenic loop drive. For the best experience, is to park the car and get out to walk. Remember to wear sturdy hiking shoes and be prepared for some climbing and uneven terrain.

Picking up “The Official Guide to The Garden of the Gods” from the Visitor Center can help travelers discover the park’s outstanding features, such as the towering Main Cathedral rock formation, the whimsical Camels Kissing, and the famous Balanced Rock. The Cathedral Valley, in particular, offers a peaceful, meditative atmosphere, perfect for clearing one’s mind and refreshing the spirit.

Stop 2: Colorado Wolf Adventures – A Wild Encounter in Manitou Springs

The one-hour walk with “Ghost,” a wolf-dog mix, through the stunning Garden of the Gods was the highlight of our trip. Peggy and her volunteer crew from Colorado Wolf Adventures greeted us at 8 am in the parking lot. After introductions, we proceeded to three different overlooks. Surrounded by this breathtaking beauty, just being in the presence of this remarkable animal was truly unforgettable.

A smiling man and woman pose with a large, light-colored wolf against the stunning backdrop of Garden of the Gods, mountains, and a partly cloudy sky. The man wears a blue shirt and a cap with sunglasses, while the woman dons a black shirt. The wolf is in the foreground, looking at camera

The volunteers provided excellent information as we walked the trail, giving us valuable insights into the wolves under their care. Each wolf in the pack of five has a unique story. Peggy took photos along the trail, allowing us to bring home memories of a lifetime. We stopped at one lookout, hoping to hear Ghost howl and the nearby coyote puppies in the park, but the wind was uncooperative that day. Despite this, Ghost was affectionate, providing kisses and allowing plenty of petting. I feel incredibly fortunate to have spent time with Ghost – it was a truly remarkable experience, well worth the price. I would wholeheartedly recommend this wolf adventure to anyone with a passion for these magnificent animals.

Stop 3: Cave of the Winds Mountain Park – Unearth the Wonders Beneath Manitou Springs

Cave of the Winds is a neat outdoor entertainment complex. The location on the rim of Williams Canyon is spectacular. There is a rock-climbing wall, Wind Walker Challenge Course, Bat-a-Pult, and zip-lining. For the real daredevil, there is the Terror-Dactyl, a 2 person swing that drops into the canyon at about 100 mph and swings until it comes to a stop. It’s pricey at $50.00 per person.

There are different tours available at varying prices. The most popular tour is the Lantern tour. I could describe it as a walk with a few spooky theatrics that mildly shock people, giving it a “haunted” vibe. The lanterns have actual flames. You feel like Tom Sawyer as you listen to your guide’s eerie storytelling tales and history of the caves. The hike, while not overly strenuous, requires ducking in certain sections and navigating through narrow passages.

The Broadmoor Seven Falls-Manitou Springs

Stop 4: The Broadmoor Seven Falls – Cascading Beauty in Manitou Springs

The Seven Falls is a touristy place, but the falls are breathtaking to see. The stimulating 224 stairs will take your breath away with the elevation change, but it is worth the cost it’s $14/person to see them. Although the name sounds like, there are 7 falls at this one location when there is just actually 1 fall with seven levels with each has its own name. The falls are in a 1,250-foot-wall box canyon between the towering pillars of Hercules. One tip is to take the elevator if elevation is a factor for you. Actually, these falls receive supplementation and are not solely from natural flow.

Easy parking in a well-maintained lot with friendly professional attendants and a free shuttle service to the falls. A stream runs along the trail where you can try your luck at panning for gold. There is a restaurant in 1858 onsite and a nice general store to purchase gifts.

Stop 5: Take the Cog Railway to the Summit of Pike’s Peak – A High-Altitude Adventure in Manitou Springs

This remarkable train, which has been in operation for well over a century, takes us on a thrilling ascent through a landscape that transitions from alpine forests to rocky tundra. We recommend making reservations well in advance for the Cog Railway. It’s a bit pricey, but worth it. We decided not to park in the lot at Old Mill Road and took the free shuttle up to the depot, even though there was parking for those with reservations.

Don’t limit yourself. Many people limit themselves to what they think they can do. You can go as far as your mind lets you. What you believe, remember, you can achieve

It’s a little tight in the seats. While boarding the train, several people commented on the size of the seats. You need to pay an additional $10 to reserve your seats if you plan to sit together. We reserved two seats on the railcar side. The opposite side has three seats together (the view is best from the three-person side). As we gained altitude, the views became more and more dramatic, offering glimpses of the surrounding mountain ranges and endless skies.

To cope with the altitude, it is important to bring plenty of water. Staying hydrated is essential. (no restrooms on the train) You have about 45 minutes at the summit and the train ride takes about 65 minutes each way (total time, 3 hours). Make sure you have a jacket because it gets cold at the top. Both our conductor and engineer did an excellent job of narrating the trip.

Reaching the summit Pikes Peak- America’s Mountain

Once the cog reached the summit, the reward was panoramic views that stretches as far as the eye can see. The views from the summit just blew me away! We saw marmots, bighorn sheep and deer while ascending and descending the incline railway. There were some spectacular panoramas of waterfalls.

We had been wanting to ride this for a long time. When we went on our first trip to Manitou Springs, the cog was not running, so we drove the road in our rental vehicle. The experience is not to be missed as there are only three Cog railways operating in the US today.

Stop 6: Drive Pikes Peak Road – A Scenic Journey to the ‘Mountain of America’

Towering at an impressive elevation of 14,115 feet (4,302 meters), Pike’s Peak stands as one of Colorado’s renowned “Fourteeners” – peaks exceeding 14,000 feet. This majestic mountain offers breathtaking vistas, ever-changing weather, and natural beauty that have captivated generations of explorers, artists, and writers. Originally named after Brigadier-General Zebulon Pike, the summit (14,155 ft) now features a memorial dedicated to this pioneering figure.

Pikes Peak information for timed entry and shuttle

The 19-mile scenic route to Pikes Peak presents a challenging but rewarding experience. Although the road costs a few dollars to access, it’s a must-do for those who haven’t yet made the journey. Beginning at around 80 degrees in Manitou Springs, the temperature plummets to the 50s by the time we reached the summit. Despite the rigors, the breathtaking vistas along the way make the Pikes Peak drive worthwhile.

Note: Be prepared with a good jacket, a hat, and long pants. Wear a good pair of walking or hiking shoes with wool socks will keep your feet warm. Remember to pack some snacks and have water before going up to the summit.

Two people pose in front of a large sign at the summit of Pikes Peak, captured during their Colorado road trip. The sign reads "Summit Pikes Peak Elevation 14,115 ft." Dressed in casual, warm clothing suitable for the mountain environment, they are surrounded by rocks and a rustic building that enhance the high-altitude setting.

A Nerve Racking Climb

As the elevation rises, the winding road becomes increasingly treacherous, with tight switchbacks near the summit that offers breathtaking views but little margin for error, as the unguarded right side of the road plummets down the mountainside. Just before reaching the shuttle parking lot, we stopped to take pictures of Bighorn Sheep along the side of the road. The females ewes were licking Gatorade off the asphalt.

A person wearing a white cap and maroon jacket takes a photo with a smartphone on top of a rugged mountain. The rocky terrain and expansive mountain ranges stretch into the distance under a clear sky. A metal pole is embedded in the rocks nearby.

As the road climbed upwards, it grew increasingly treacherous. We experienced tight switchbacks that offered breathtaking vistas but little room for error. On the right side, there were no guardrails to stop you from plummeting down the mountainside. A highlight for us was just before reaching the shuttle parking lot. We pulled over to photograph a herd of Bighorn Sheep grazing along the roadside. The female ewes were licking spilled Gatorade off the asphalt. At least I hope it was something non-toxic.

The year we did the scenic road, all vehicles were required to stop at marker 16. Visitors then had to take a shuttle to the summit. The ongoing construction of the new summit house limited parking during this time. Fortunately, they had completed the construction of the new summit house. We wore long pants and fleece jackets to protect against the chilly winds. Arriving early, we avoided any lines for the shuttle up to the summit. On the ride up, we spotted yellow-bellied marmots basking on the roadside. At the summit, there was still some snow, despite an incremental snowfall that year.

A High-Altitude Adventure: The Summit House Pike’s Peak

The summit gift shop offers an array of gifts and a small on-site restaurant. While we didn’t indulge, the summit house is renowned for its “world-famous” donuts, which drew long lines of eager customers. Apparently, the secret donut recipe only works at this high altitude. And don’t forget to snap a photo with Sasquatch as you explore the gift shop.

From the summit’s peak, the views are truly remarkable. On a clear day, you can see for miles across the surrounding landscape. The elevation is a staggering 14,115 feet, so the climb over the rocky terrain left us a bit winded. The blustery, chilly conditions were undeniable, with the wind whipping relentlessly. It’s crucial to remember that high-altitude environments can experience rapid, dramatic weather changes. Even on a warm summer day in Manitou Springs, temperatures atop Pike’s Peak can plummet to near-freezing levels. Dressing in layers and packing appropriate cold-weather gear is essential for this trek.

A Serene Escape Enjoy a Picnic at Crystal Reservoir

On the descent of the mountain, it is important to keep your transmission in the lowest gear so that your brakes do not overheat. Glad we upgraded our rental, our brakes passed at the mandatory brake checkpoint. It is exhilarating to have your head in the clouds and be on top of the world!

The North Slope Recreation Area includes Crystal Reservoir, North Catamount and South Catamount Reservoir. Sitting at an elevation of 9200 feet, it was the perfect place to stop and let the brakes on the rental vehicle cool. First, we stepped inside the Crystal Reservoir Gift Shop and the visitors’ center to look over the displays. The picnic area overlooks the 136-acre reservoir, the perfect place to enjoy lunch. As I gazed upon the smooth lake, I couldn’t help but wish I could spend the day trout fishing here. Unfortunately, our schedule today doesn’t allow for that.

Note: Now visitors are required to purchase a NSRA Daily Permit and a 1-Day Admission Pass to visit any of the lakes in the North Slope Recreation Area.

Stop 7: Climb the Manitou Springs Incline: A Challenge Worth Taking

The incline is a great, free attraction to visit. We parked in the Barr trailhead lot just past the Cog railway depot for a small fee. While no reservations were required when we hiked the trail, that policy has since changed.

NOTE: The Incline now requires a reservation between the hours of 6:00am and 6:30pm-Link. Reservations are available for no fee and can be made 4 to 8 weeks in advanced.

Views of the Mountains surrounding Manitou Springs

As always, this was a physically demanding but rewarding experience. Regardless of your physical condition, you will feel accomplished following this workout. With an awe-inspiring 2,744 steps (railroad ties) the Manitou incline ascends approximately 2,000 feet in elevation over a mere one-mile distance. While the climb may be demanding, the views are nothing short of spectacular.

Note: Incline Trail users are now required to park at Hiawatha Gardens or Iron Springs Chateau (fees apply). Take the free shuttle to the Cog Depot.

Bring more water than you think you will need (2 bottles per person) and don’t forget sunscreen. It’s easy to take frequent breaks along the trail. You can only compare the achievement you feel with the beauty that unfolds before you as you travel up the incline. Our return trip down the mountain was via the Barr trail (3-miles). The Barr trail leads all the way to the top of Pike’s Peak. The switchbacks down the mountain are through a mostly shaded forest. It is a great way to end this climb.

Stop 8. Shopping in Historic Manitou Springs: A Unique Retail Experience

The town’s main street, Manitou Avenue, is lined with historic buildings that evoke a nostalgic ambiance. Many of the shops appear unchanged for decades, ranging from family-owned niche stores to local mom-and-pop businesses. While parking can be a challenge, the town offers a shuttle service to transport visitors. Throughout the area, numerous mineral springs flow freely, each offering a unique flavor that visitors can sample – some merchants even provide cups. In addition to the mineral springs, the town boasts an array of restaurants, cafes, and ice cream shops. For the younger crowd, a centralized arcade location provides gaming and rides.

Exploring the Garden of the Gods Trading Post: Where Nature and Culture Converge

If you’re looking for that special gift to take home, this is the place to go. Founded over a century ago, this unique store has continually grown to its current size. In addition to common souvenirs, there are quite a few unusual items for sale, including treasures from local artisans. Countless shelves hold items to bring home and racks contain clothing items adorned with your favorite “Colorado” phrases. Sandwiches and burgers are served inside a small cafe. Lots of flavors were available at the ice cream counter. Don’t forget to get a sample of fudge. Garden of the Gods Trading Post is not just a place to shop; it’s a destination that encapsulates the spirit of the American West.

Commonwheel Artists Co-op: Where Creativity Thrives

The Commonwheel Artists Co-op is more than just an art gallery – it’s a vibrant hub of creativity and collaboration showcasing a distinct supply of locally made art, including unique metal pieces. Catering to those seeking one-of-a-kind works at accessible price points, the co-op offers an impressive selection to suit a range of budgets. I purchased a beautiful trout metal sculpture crafted by one of the featured local artists. This is one of my all-time favorite shops anywhere.

Crystal Park Cantina: A Mexican Oasis in the Heart of Manitou Springs

Margarita

A 5-minute drive off the main road is Crystal Park Cantina. This is a hidden gem we found based on the ratings and reviews of previous TripAdvisor members. Although there is limited parking, arriving early, you will not have this problem. Arrive hungry since the plates are plentiful. You can choose to sit inside or outside. We opted to sit on the terrace outside in the afternoon’s cool.

Brightly colored flowers filed the planters. A small water feature creates a serene ambiance. Our friendly server took our order fairly quickly, not waiting. Besides, it was the happy hour they had fruit margaritas for $5. The Mango Margarita was great and included chips and salsa. We split an order of steak and Baja fish tacos. They have freshly made corn tortillas topped with slaw, pico de gallo, crema, and guacamole served with rice and beans. We enjoyed our quiet dinner here, definitely an excellent choice.

Uncle Sam's Pancake House

Uncle Sam’s Pancake House: Where Every Bite is a Taste of Home

This place has excellent food. Uncle Sam’s Pancake House is a little slice of classic America. Remember when families took road trips and ate food in diners that served home-cooked food? It is just like stepping back in time. It is one of the few breakfast places to open at 6 am. For us, it was just across the street within walking distance from Green Willow Cottages. This is a family operated business. I love the patriotism shown from the decor to the military discount.

Our server was friendly. Being the only early customers, we had no trouble getting seated. Uncle Sam offers a wide variety of breakfast options to suit every taste. Our order was promptly taken, and the coffee was served immediately. They make sure that your coffee is always full. The prices at Uncle Sam’s Pancake House are reasonable, which is a plus for travelers looking for a budget-friendly meal. The breakfast was delicious! Real home cooking, all cooked to perfection!

Tranquil Escape: Green Willow Cottages in Manitou Springs

This is a family-owned small business with rental cottages at a reasonable price. Owned by the Heruth Family Green Willow Cottages has been in business since 1953. The cottages evoke a feeling of nostalgia when you first enter the motor court. It is like stepping back in time to the late 1960s. It is located just off the main road within a walking distance of the Garden of the Gods and downtown Manitou Springs. However, it is extremely peaceful. We did not hear the road noise at all. The front desk personnel were very accommodating. They knew who we were as we entered to get our key. Check-in was very simple. Even though there is no A/C in the cabins, we did not need it since the mountain nights were reasonably cool. They provide a small fan when the evenings become warmer.

Note: Sadly Green Willow Cottages has permanently closed

We had a cabin #10; it was small, clean, with a small fridge and a microwave. A definite plus was the small front porch with chairs to sit on and listen to the nearby fountain creek. We sat outside after dinner, remarkably a mule deer approach within a few feet of our porch. So hard to believe in such an urban environment.
