Today our fishing adventure begins in stunning South Fork. There is unsurpassed beauty in this mountain valley. Astounding South Fork sits at an elevation 8200 feet within the Rio Grande National Forest. A Gold medal fishery the unrivaled in the Rio Grande River is a fly-fishing paradise. This trek was high on our list when we planned this trip to Colorado.

Nestled between the Sangre de Cristo and San Juan Mountains, the South Fork of the Rio Grande River holds a rich history. Where highway 160 & 149 meet in the center of town, you will find the beginning of the historic Silver Thread National Scenic Byway. Initially developed as a community to service lumbering and mining, the town is now the center of a rapidly growing tourist and recreation area.
There are many outdoor activities to do here in all seasons. Notably, fly-fishing is unsurpassed in the Rio Grande River, a Gold Medal fishery or rafting the upper reaches of the river. Opportunities to get outside are many: hiking, horseback riding, ATV rides, and in winter, snowmobiling and skiing are a favorite for the locals.

Casting Dreams: Superb Fishing the Rio Grande River in South Fork
We awoke to the sounds of the river early in the morning. We were intent on catching some fishing before checkout. The stillness of the early morning, broken only by the gentle sounds of the river and the distant call of wildlife, created a sense of tranquility that is rare to find in our fast-paced world. As the sun rose higher in the sky, we couldn’t help but be grateful for the breathtaking beauty that surrounded us.
The river waters are quite cold. Investing in a good pair of waders and wading boots will keep your feet comfortable and dry. Best money we have ever spent investing in good fishing gear. We used a Redington 9-foot 5-wt fly rod with a floating line that is perfect for fishing dry flies on this river. There was 700 feet of river frontage at Riverside Meadows.
Our host noted the trout were keying in on smaller mayflies. The hatches were very prolific and feeding fish; he said they were still biting. The best method for fly-fishing was to cast upstream and let the fly run with the current. Barry caught a really nice 12-inch brown trout. It was a fish I had on the line earlier and lost. Both rainbows and browns upwards of 16-inches are taken in this section of the river.
The fishing here is really outstanding, and I would highly recommend add this to your Colorado itinerary here just for the fishing. We have fished a few of the rivers in Colorado, including the Big Thompson River in Estes Park, and the Animas River in Durango. These rivers are also excellent fly-fishing destinations.

Our journey extended beyond the riverbanks. We explored the charming town of South Fork, where we were welcomed by friendly locals and immersed ourselves in the warm, welcoming atmosphere of this mountain community.

1. Unearthing History: Visit the Mining Town of Creede
In the heart of the San Juan Mountains, just a stone’s throw away from South Fork, lies the historic mining town of Creede. With its rich heritage and picturesque charm, Creede is a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts and adventurers alike. Step back in time as you explore this captivating town, where the echoes of the past resonate through its well-preserved streets, and the spirit of the Old West comes alive.
We started our journey through Creede by visiting the Creede Underground Mining Museum, where you can delve into the history of mining in the region. The museum offers fascinating exhibits, guided tours, and a chance to explore a portion of the actual underground mining tunnels, providing a glimpse into the challenging and perilous life of miners in the late 1800s.
Don’t forget to explore the surrounding natural beauty while you’re in Creede. The town is surrounded by stunning landscapes, offering opportunities for hiking, fishing, and outdoor adventures in the nearby Rio Grande National Forest and the Weminuche Wilderness.
2. Embarking on Exceptional Hiking Adventures in South Fork’s Valley
Hiking the Rio Grande National Forest, encompasses approximately 1.86 million acres. There are miles and miles of hiking trails that traverse mountains tops, river valleys, and alpine meadows. The panoramic views are quite spectacular from any of the overlooks. The national forest is home to a cluster of fourteeners-fourteen thousand foot lofty peaks. Be sure to check the National Forest Service Office. They offer information, free maps, and detailed trail conditions before you embarking the many trails in the Forest. When hiking in the mountains, bring plenty of water, have good hiking boots and apply generous amounts of sunblock and bug spray.
Hunters Lake Loop is an easy 1.1-mile scenic hike great for children. We saw lots of flowers and a few chipmunks. This is a great day hike for fly-fishing rainbows in the lake. To reach Hunters Lake Trail from South Fork, Colorado, travel west along Highway 160 for 10.5 miles and turn right at Big Meadows Road and follow FR 430 until you reach the trailhead.
Eye-opening Treasure Falls is directly off the highway. It is a short hike from the bottom of Highway I60. The trail will have you front and center for breathtaking photos. The main trail is steep, but the view at the end is totally worth the climb.
3. Hoofing It in South Fork: Horseback Riding Adventures
Consider a morning or afternoon 1 or 2-hour guided ride through the beautiful aspen groves in the Colorado mountains or along the Rio Grande River. There are a few stables that do trails daily. This is one of the best ways to see the leaves as they change in the fall. South Fork in the fall is hard to beat with stands of Colorado gold, contrasting with dark evergreens and blue skies. Nature’s color palette in the southwest high country. Gorgeous photos everywhere. The views are best seen on the back of a noble animal, such as the horse.
4. Rafting the Scenic River in South Fork, Colorado
Summer is perfect for floating the Rio on an inflatable kayak or raft. Mountain Man Rafting offers trips that include some class I and II from Creede to South Fork. As our guide expertly navigated the thrilling rapids of the scenic South Fork river in Colorado, we clung tightly to our raft. The adrenaline rush of conquering each rapid was exhilarating, despite the nerve-wracking moments. Surrounded by the river’s breathtaking natural beauty, this whitewater excursion proved to be a truly worthwhile adventure.
They say “timing is everything” so combination kayaking the river with a fishing float quest. Proper fishing etiquette always dictates you give other anglers plenty of space. Fishing the Rio Grande River is an ideal venture, as there is more than enough river to fish. Although there is limited access to public shoreline for wade fishing, hire a guide for a float down the 17 miles of ‘Gold Medal’ waters between South Fork and Del Norte.
5. Exploring the Backcountry on ATV Trails in South Fork
Looking for an escape? Try trail riding in the mountains on an ATV or Jeep 4 x 4. The visitor centers can provide free maps for ATV trails in the area. You can easily gain access to the backcountry by renting a Jeep 4 x 4 or hiring a guide to take you on the trails. Big-Time Fun!
6. Winter Wonderland Adventure: Wolf Creek Pass Ski Area
Wolf Creek Pass (el. 10,857 ft.) Is a high mountain pass on the Continental Divide, in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado. It is very steep and one of the most dangerous passes in Colorado. It is where you will cross the Continental Divide. You will follow the South Fork of the Rio Grande river down the mountain into South Fork. Wolf Creek Ski Resort is the snowiest place in Colorado, averaging 436 inches of snow per year. It made Wolf Creek famous in song by C. W. McCall -“Wolf Creek Pass”.
7. Unleash Your Adventurous Spirit: Trekking the Great Sand Dunes of Colorado
South Fork is central to the state. It is only a short drive to Great Sand Dunes National Park. The National Park is home to the tallest sand dunes in North America. Climbing or sledding the dunes can be a splendid way to pass your day. We hiked to the top of the Star dune, although I must say walking in the soft sand makes for a great workout. If Medano creek is flowing, cool your feet at the end of the day. If you have time, stop at Zapata Falls on your return trip.
Riverside Meadows Cabins: Your Ultimate Retreat in South Fork, Colorado
Just off the beaten path, Riverside Meadows Cabins are an ideal place to stay in South Fork. Do not use google map. Instead, use the instructions given by Fritz to find the cabins. The cabins are on eight private-secluded acres next to the Rio Grande river.
The three cabins are Norwegian-style dovetail log homes. We stayed in the guest cabin. The cabin is really beautiful, with a marvellous view of the river from the front window and a large screen door. There are homey touches throughout the cabin that represent the Norwegian culture, such as hand-carved colorful masks and traditional clothing. It has a queen sleigh bed that is very comfortable, an enormous bathroom, and a walk-in closet. The cabin was immaculate and very cozy.
Amenities included a hot tub on-site, free rafting or inflatable kayaks with shuttle service, not to mention fishing right outside steps away from your cabin. Although we only spent one night here, I think it would be a great base camp for a family vacation. We really wish we could have spent our entire week here. Fritz and Paula Allen are the ideal hosts providing activity help, fishing reports, and pleasant conversation. Kenai, their dog, made us feel right at home.

Fritz our host recommended Ramon’s for dinner. If you’re craving Mexican cuisine, Ramon’s is the place to go. Enjoy classic dishes like tacos, enchiladas, and fajitas in a cozy, family-friendly atmosphere. We were extremely pleased with our meal and service. This is a family-owned & operated restaurant and everyone pitches in to make customers happy. I had a Sangria and Barry had a beer. We both had the soup of the day, Mexican Meatball. The soup was like a good home-cooked stew, lots of veggies, and a giant meatball. For dinner, we decided on the steak fajitas for two. They could easily feed four. They were hot, and all trimmings were just the right amount. The service was excellent, we never waited for anything. The food arrived promptly, water glasses always filled, and a friendly smile from the hostess. Would visit again-menu selection is great, very authentic.

This fishing trip in South Fork, Colorado, for us was an incredible experience. It definitely left us feeling inspired. Our small log cabin in South Fork, on the banks of the river, proved to be an angler’s dream. Situated in the valley, we had gorgeous views of the surrounding San Juan Mountains. What an amazing backdrop for our fishing activities.
The Rio Grande River’s crystal-clear waters teemed with abundant trout, making it the ultimate fishing destination.
